TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Chicago State University volleyball team opened its 2014 season here today by earning a split on the first day of the Holiday Inn Classic, hosted by Indiana State, after defeating North Carolina A&T, 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11), in the first match before dropping a 3-1 (25-18, 25-27, 15-25, 26-28) decision to Akron.
In the North Carolina A&T contest, the Cougars received a pair of double-doubles from freshman
Sarah Metcalfe (Huntington Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) and junior
Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule). Metcalfe produced a match-leading 39 assists, while Woinowsky recorded 10 kills and 10 digs to go along with a match-high six service aces. CSU also received a match-high 11 kills from junior
Amber Graham (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View). The Green and White's defense proved to be the star of the match with junior
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) producing seven block assists and sophomore
Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) notching six blocks (five assisted, one solo).
Woinowsky paced Chicago State in the Akron match with eight kills and three service aces, while Metcalfe dished out 27 assists and senior
Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) posted a match-leading 20 digs.
CSU concludes the Holiday Inn Classic tomorrow afternoon against host Indiana State at 12 p.m. and Wright State at 3:30 p.m., central time.
