Wattley and Gonzalez Join Chicago State Men’s Tennis

Rohan Wattley and Chris Gonzalez
CHICAGO – Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham Grammar School) and Chris Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) have agreed to join the Chicago State University men's tennis program in the fall of 2014, CSU head coach Jack Barton has announced.

Wattley played for Berkshire U18's County Team for three years. He recorded a 12-4 record and helped the squad earn a division championship in 2014. He helped the David Lloyd Heston's men team win the division and be promoted to Premier Division in Great Britain. Wattley also played soccer and rugby.

"Rohan is a mentally strong player and that will help him coming in as a freshman." Barton said. "He is not the type of player that will beat himself and will make a lot of plays. He doesn't get down on himself and that's a quality that will make him an asset to the team."

Gonzalez is ranked No. 164 in Spain. He won the Euskadi Championship Under 16 championship and Euskadi Championship doubles in 2013. In 2012 he was runner up in the TTK Warriors Tournament. He also won the Nacional Ciudad de Calahorra in 2010. He owns singles victories over several ranked players in Spain.

"Christian has wins against players ranked in the top 100 in Spain," Barton said. "We have high expectations for him, and believe he will give our team a lot of depth which is what we have been lacking the last couple of years."

The Cougars will open the 2014-15 campaign in September.

"I'm very pleased with our 2014 recruiting class," Barton said. "I have to give a lot of credit to (assistant coach) Javier Bernabe. It is very hard to bring in one quality player for a tennis team so to help bring in two men shows the dedication and commitment he has to improving our tennis teams for the future."
