HTML BoxHighland Heights, Ky. - The Chicago State women's tennis team went on the road and took care of the Northern Kentucky Nore 5-2 at the Yeager Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon (April 6).
Freshman
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) returned from injury to clinch the match for the Cougars after defeating Nicole Soutar 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
"Hanna played great to clinch the match for us," said assistant coach
Javier Bernabe. "It's hard to play as well as she (Pangestu) did. Hanna's playing at a very high level."
Freshman
Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) won 6-0, 6-3 over Danielle Donahue while sophomore
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) came back to win the final two sets in her 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win over Marta Romeo. Freshman
Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) dropped one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yasmine Xantos.
Sophomore
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Maria Voscekova while Sierra Nellessen took down sophomore
Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) 6-2, 6-3 for the two Norse points.
Utech and sophomore
Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) won 8-5 over Voscekova and Donahue at No. 1 doubles. Lloyd and Huckabee cruised to an 8-2 win over Soutar and Xantos. Nellessen and Romeo defeated Pangestu and Perez-Ochoa 8-7.
Bernabe discussed how well CSU performed in the victory .
"Great win by the team," said the first-year assistant. "Everybody stepped up their game. Winning doubles was very important to take some pressure off. After that, we dominated the match as Kirsa and Faith picked up quick and easy victories in singles."
The Cougars improved to 6-15 on the year while Northern Kentucky fell to 5-13. CSU remains on the road as they take on Marquette next Friday (April 11) with the match scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
