Javier Bernabe was named Chicago State tennis assistant coach in Nov. 2013. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Illinois University.
As an assistant at Northern Illinois, Bernabe was involved in all phases of the program. He helped structure team practices including technique analysis, match preparation and scouting. He also assisted the head coach in fundraising and budget management while also putting together the team’s travel plans. Bernabe recruited players on both the national and international level and helped incoming freshmen by tutoring them on time management.
As a student-athlete at Northern Illinois, he was an All-Mid-American Conference second team member. Off the court, he made the Academic All-Mid-American Conference twice. He was a part of the Northern Illinois team that won the Mid-American Conference in 2012, the first in program history. In his senior year, the Huskies made it to the Mid-American Conference Tournament final for the first time since 2003.
Bernabe also coached the Northern Illinois Junior Davis Cup teams in 2011-12 and spent time as the Head Tennis Pro at Old Willow Tennis Club in Glenview, Ill.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Bernabe graduated from Northern Illinois in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He also received his masters’ degree in Business Administration and Sports Management from Northern Illinois while he was an assistant.
