Grand Canyon Wins WAC Contest Over Chicago State 84-74

PHOENIX – A late first half run by the Grand Canyon 'Lopes ended up being the difference in Chicago State's 84-74 loss at GCU Arena on Saturday (March 1) in a Western Athletic Conference contest. 
 
The opening 20 minutes was an up and down the court affair. It featured 14 lead changes and 11 ties. The 'Lopes were the ones to pull away late in the first half thanks to a 9-3 run. GCU recorded four offensive boards in the final two minutes of the half to help with the effort. For the game Grand Canyon held a 15-3 edge in second chance points.
 
A 3-pointer by junior Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) opened the scoring in the second half, but after that the Cougars went cold form the floor. A 17-4 'Lopes run followed. Grand Canyon led the rest of the way. The Cougars did cut the lead to seven points at 77-70 with three minutes left but Chicago State would get no closer.
 
Senior Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) finished with 27 points, one short of his career-high. Pippen made 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. He helped the Cougars make a season-high 12 3-pointers.
 
Grand Canyon senior Killian Larson had a Senior Night to remember, scoring 31 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He had 28 points against Chicago State in an earlier meeting this season.
 
Senior Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars. Rosenberg totaled 13 points.
 
The 'Lopes made 31-of-39 attempts from the free throw line while Chicago State made 10-of-13.
 
Grand Canyon moves to 14-13 (9-5 WAC) with the win. The Cougars fall to 12-17 (7-7 WAC). Chicago State has two games left in the regular season. First up is Idaho on Thursday (March 6) at 7:05 p.m. Then the  Cougars host Seattle U on Saturday (March 8) on Senior Day for the Cougars. Tip on Saturday is 2:05 p.m.
