Wright State Uses 3-0 Decision To Top Chicago State Volleyball

CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball lost a pair of sets by the slimmest of margins on Wednesday (Sept. 18) evening at the Jacoby Dickens Center in a non-conference loss to Wright State 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-23).
 
Following a set one setback by six points, the Cougars and Raiders played a second set which featured nine ties and two lead changes. Senior Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) recorded seven of her 13 kills in the second set. The Cougars took a 16-13 lead after back-to-back hitting errors by the Raiders. Wright State followed with six points to grab their own three-point advantage. The Raiders led 22-18 when the Cougars responded with a 5-1 run. Sioto recorded three kills in the stretch. Chicago State turned away two Wright State set points before the Raiders finally capitalized on the third for a 27-25 victory.
 
The third set was all Chicago State early. The Cougars grabbed a 13-15 lead, only to see Wright State pull within two at 14-12. The Cougars opened up a lead again at 18-13, forcing a Wright State timeout. The Raiders rallied out of the break to eventually tie the Cougars at 23. A kill by Miranda Puthoff for point 24 and a block by Haley Garr and Heidi Splinter for point 25 gave the win to the Raiders.  
 
Splinter recorded 13 kills for Wright State.
 
Senior Madeleine Radtke (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) and junior Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) each added seven kills for Chicago State. Junior Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) finished with 16 digs for the second consecutive match. Townsell also added two aces.
 
Wright State improves to 6-8. Chicago State falls to 2-11. The Cougars travel to Indiana State on Tuesday (Sept. 24) before entering the Western Athletic Conference play on Sept. 28 against Grand Canyon. It will be Chicago State's first ever contest in the WAC.
