CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball fell 55-51 at home to Great West Conference foe Texas-Pan American on Saturday (Feb. 23). The Cougars are 4-6 in their last 10 games with all six losses coming by five points or less.
Saturday's game featured 11 lead changes and seven ties. The difference in the game came from the nine-minute mark to the five-minute mark in the second half. Chicago State led 42-37 with 9:32 remaining following a basket by sophomore
Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township). But a 12-2 UTPA run ensued and with 4:54 left the Broncs led 49-44. Shaquille Hines had seven points for the Broncs in the game changing stretch.
However the Cougars had a chance down the stretch. Rosenberg nailed a 3-pointer with 3:22 remaining to make the score 51-49 in favor of UTPA. Chicago State asked for time to set up their defense but Brandon Provost scored the final three of his game-leading 23 points on a 3-pointer on the next possession for UTPA. The basket all but locked up the win for the Broncs.
“A lot of credit to Texas Pan-Am,” Chicago State head coach
Tracy Dildy said. “They just lost a tough game in Arlington a couple nights ago and had some rough travel and they clearly wanted it more. It's about guys making plays and guys wanting it more and they (UTPA) did. Guys came off the bench and made plays and we made excuses. The team that makes the plays usually wins and the team that makes the excuses loses.”
Provost was the only UTPA Bronc in double-figures.
Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) finished with a team-high 14 points with five rebounds, two steals and two assists for Chicago State. Rosenberg added 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.
UTPA improves to 14-15 (4-3 GWC). The Cougars are now 8-19 and 2-4 inside GWC play.
Chicago State hosts Eastern Illinois on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night for the Cougars. The game will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television and ESPN3.com. Fans can hear the broadcast on WVON 1690 AM.
