DAYTON, Ohio – Chicago State women's tennis fell at Dayton on Sunday (Feb. 10) morning 6-1.
The Cougars' lone point came by freshman
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) (Louisville, Ky./Male) at No. 2 singles. She defeated Carly Peck 3-6, 6-3, 15-13. She was down 8-4 in the third set tiebreaker and came back to win.
For the second consecutive match the Cougars were without No. 1 player
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) (Jakarta, Indonesia) due to an injury.
“We hope to have Karyn back in the lineup next weekend but I am proud of the freshmen,” Chicago State head coach
Jack Barton said. “This weekend Marnie played up in the lineup and had two third set tiebreakers. I recruited her because she fights hard and never gives up and it showed this weekend.”
While the Cougars lost the doubles point, they did win at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen
Viviene Noel (Liege, Belgium/) (Liege, Belgium) and
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) defeated Peck and Maureen Stevens 8-5. It was their first doubles victory of the season and came at a position higher than what they've played before.
“We played hard in doubles but we couldn't come up with the critical points at No. 2,” Barton said. “Sabrine and Ruta came back from 5-1 but just couldn't get over the hump.”
Dayton improves to 5-3. Chicago State falls to 2-6.
“All in all I am pleased with the way the team responded with Karyn getting hurt,” Barton said. “We will get Karyn healed up and have an exciting week of practice before Fort Wayne next weekend.
The Cougars return to the court on Feb. 15 against Robert Morris (Pa.) and IPFW. Both matches will be played in Fort Wayne, Ind.
