BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
– Early foul trouble and a cold shooting hand from beyond the arc contributed to a 100-72 season-opening loss for Chicago State men's basketball at No. 24 Indiana on Friday (Nov. 8) evening at Assembly Hall.

The story of the game was fouls and free throws. By halftime six Cougars earned multiple fouls with senior Eddie Denard (Chicago, Ill./Foreman) and freshman Kurt Karis (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North ) each committing three personals in the half. Indiana converted those fouls to an 18-23 performance at the free throw line in the first half.

The game shifted to IU's favor with a Chicago State scoring drought midway through the first. As Chicago State struggled offensively, Indiana turned a 15-10 game into a 23-10 score. A 3-pointer by senior Nate Duhon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) with 8:21 left put Chicago State back within striking distance at 29-18. However Indiana continued to pull away, taking a 47-28 lead to halftime.

By the end of the game, Indiana finished 45-of-55 from the free throw line, setting a new school record for made free throws in a single game. Jeremy Hallowell led Indiana with 16 points. Noah Vonleh recorded a double-double of 14 rebounds and 11 points.

The Cougars were led offensively by junior Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township)'s career-high 27 points. He finished 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Denard totaled 10 points for Chicago State. Senior Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) set a career-high with six blocks. He also added nine points and seven rebounds.

Freshmen Willie Rosenthal (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) (3) and Johnny Griffin (Ford Heights, Ill./Bloom Trail ) (2) each scored their first career points for Chicago State.

Indiana improves to 1-0 while the Cougars are 0-1.

Despite the outcome, the Cougars made some noise defensively. The 19 Indiana turnovers Chicago State forced  matched the Hoosiers' high in turnovers last season.

Chicago State finished 21-of-81 (25.9 percent) from the floor. Indiana was 27-of-59 (45.8 percent). The Cougars made 8-of-36 3-point attempts.

"The amount of 3-pointers we took is out of character for us, that isn't the type of team we are," Chicago State head coach Tracy Dildy said. "Our focus turns to getting a win tomorrow."

It's the shortest of turnarounds for the Cougars. Chicago State hosts Urbana (Ohio) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CT. It's the second game of a doubleheader as the Chicago State women host Indiana Tech at 2 p.m. The Chicago State men will receive their Great West Conference Tournament Championship rings before the men's game. It is also homecoming for Chicago State.
