CHICAGO – Senior
Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) hit .275 with a match-high 21 kills but Chicago State volleyball fell 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-16) to Idaho on Thursday (Nov. 14) evening in a Western Athletic Conference match at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
Thursday's match was Sioto's third 20-kill match of the season and second in her last three matches after recording 21 kills at UTPA on Nov. 7. She was fed by freshman setter
Mackenzie Lotter (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) who recorded 47 assist, a career-high for a four-set match.
The Cougars won the opening set thanks to six aces in the frame. Senior Madeleine Radkte and junior
Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) each recorded a pair of aces. Radtke's aces came back-to-back. Her ace on point 12, on a ball which was going out of bounds before a Vandal accidently was hit in the leg by the ball, forced an Idaho timeout at 12-6. Chicago State's only timeout of the frame came after Idaho advanced within three at 19-16. Idaho committed a service error following the break and then Desiderio pounded down a kill for a 21-16 lead. Back-to-back kills by Sioto gave the Cougars points 24 and 25. Chicago State hit .357 (13-3-28) to Idaho's .333 (11-2-27) in the first set.
Set two was another solid start for the Cougars. This time it was Menhart recording her third ace of the match to give Chicago State a 4-1 lead. Chicago State led until Idaho took a 9-8 lead on a CSU attack error. The Cougars would never lead again in the set.
The third set had nine ties and five lead changes. The Vandals sided out on 15-of-21 (71 percent) chances to keep the Cougars form putting a multiple point run together.
Idaho's success continued in the fourth set as the Vandals clinched the match.
Junior
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs. Menhart finished with 17 digs and three aces. Freshman
Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) hit .545 with seven kills.
Four Vandals finished with double-digit kills, led by Jessica Hastriter's 13.
Idaho is now 16-10 (9-5 WAC). Chicago State falls to 2-28 (0-15 WAC). The Cougars close the 2013 season on Saturday with a 7 p.m. match with Seattle U. It will be Senior Night for the Cougars.
