CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's hoops squad has played 13 road games during the 2012-13 campaign, so it's no coincidence why the Cougars value their time at the Jones Convocation Center after defeating Houston Baptist 81-56 and improving their home record to 5-1 on Saturday (Jan. 19) evening.
“This is a great win for the guys and I want our guys feeling good about themselves and they are feeling pretty good as we've had some success on our home court but we have some things we have to correct,” Chicago State head coach
Tracy Dildy said following the victory.
Chicago State, who never trailed in the contest, benefited from a season-high 15 3-point field goals. Junior
Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg/Missouri State-West Plains CC) opened the game with a 3-pointer and went on to lead the way for Chicago State with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Cougars came into the game averaging a conference-best 7.2 3-pointers per game.
Sophomore
Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) (Skokie, Ill./Evanston) provided a much needed scoring punch off the bench for coach Dildy with 12 points including two 3-point plays late in the first half which helped Chicago State to a 17 point halftime lead. Junior
Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) (Dixon, Ill./Dixon/Sauk Valley CC) added 11 points, while junior
Corey Gray (Houston, Texas/Hightower) (Houston, Texas/Hightower/UIC) chipped in with 10.
Chicago State was also locked in on the defense holding Houston Baptist to just six field goals on 22 attempts in the first half for 27 percent. Overall, the Huskies shot 38 percent from the field including 2-of-15 from 3-point line and committed 24 turnovers which led to 19 Chicago State points.
Despite the effort, the Chicago State coaching staff still saw things the Cougars could improve.
“I wasn't pleased with our concentration at the end, I thought we got a little lackadaisical and good teams just don't do that,” Dildy said.
Houston Baptist's Art Bernardi posted a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Chicago State improved to 6-14 overall and 1-1 inside the Great West Conference. Houston Baptist remained winless in the GWC falling to 0-3 and 4-14 overall. Chicago State will look to make it three consecutive victories tomorrow night when they host non-conference foe Loyola of the Horizon League at 7:05 pm. The game will be broadcast live on Lakeshore Public Television.
