CHICAGO – Three Cougars scored in double-figures including a game-high 19 points by sophomore
Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) to help Chicago State men's basketball defeat Benedictine-Springfield 77-53 on Monday (Jan. 14) evening at the Jones Convocation Center.
“We we're able to play everybody,” head coach
Tracy Dildy said. “Guys who work hard everyday in practice got a chance to get some minutes.”
Benedictine-Springfield's only lead of the game came at 1-0 following a free throw just over a minute into the contest. Chicago State built a lead with the Bulldogs' only push coming late in the first half when they cut the CSU deficit to eight points at 31-23. Chicago State ended the half with back-to-back 3-pointers by juniors
Jamere Dismukes (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East/BlackHawk College) and
Corey Gray (Houston, Texas/Hightower) (Houston, Texas/Hightower/UIC) to make the halftime score 37-23. Thanks to an 11-2 run by the Cougars to open the second half, the 3-pointers ended up being part of a larger 17-2 push that stretched both halves. The Cougars twice built a lead as large as 33 points in the second half.
Nine different Chicago State players recorded a field goal. Rosenberg's 19 points tied a career-high. He shot 8-of-11 from the floor. Junior
Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) (Dixon, Ill./Dixon/Sauk Valley CC) chipped in with 13 points. Senior
Jeremy Robinson (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower) (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower/Iowa Western CC) notched his fourth double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Seven of Robinson's boards came on the offensive glass. He helped Chicago State hold an 18-4 edge in second chance points. Robinson added two steals and two assists for good measure. The Cougars racked up 14 assists with Dismukes dishing out five.
The Cougars scored 29 points off 25 Bulldogs turnovers.
“We did a good job rebounding,” Dildy said. “Forcing a team to 25 turnovers, I was pleased with that.”
Chicago State improves to 5-14. The game counted as an exhibition for NAIA member Benedictine-Springfield.
Monday's contest was the first at home since Dec. 8, 2012 after seven-straight home games.
“It was a great feeling being back at home and seeing those white uniforms,” Dildy said.
