CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball suffered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-13) setback to Houston Baptist at the Jacoby Dickens Center on Saturday (Sept. 29) in the Great West Conference opener for the Cougars.
Junior
Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas), fresh off being named GWC Defensive Player of the Week, continued her steady defensive play with 21 digs.
Freshman
Alyssa Podwell (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) totaled five kills, two aces and four digs.
The Cougars jumped out to identical 2-0 leads in both the first and second sets. However the Huskies responded with a 6-0 push in the first and a 4-0 push in the second to take early control of the set. The Cougars made the opening frame close thanks to four straight points that made the score 18-16. Senior
Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) started the push with a kill.
Van Munster finished with four kills and three blocks (one solo).
The Huskies out-hit the Cougars .220 to .018.
“We had great practices this week unfortunately we didn't apply (our performances) in practice to the game today,” Chicago State volleyball head coach Bob Eskew said. “I'm very disappointed in the outcome and we're going to hit the practice floor real hard next week.”
The win improves Houston Baptist to 11-8 (2-0 GWC). Chicago State is now 2-16 (0-1 GWC). The Cougars return to the court next Saturday (Oct. 6) with a noon contest against GWC-foe NJIT.
