Coppin State recap
Van Munster hit .484 and had only two errors in the match. Her 17 kills top her previous high of 13 set just last Tuesday against Judson. She had a kill for point 25 in the first set to give the Cougars a quick 1-0 advantage in the match. Her kill came with the score 24-23 and ensured Coppin State didn't have a chance to rally.
She also came up big late in set two. Chicago State led just 20-19 but finished the frame with five straight points. Van Munster had two kills in the final push.
In the fourth set, following a Coppin State victory in the third, the Cougars were able to close out the match by recording 16 kills as a team in the set. Not surprising, Van Munster had seven kills in the fourth alone.
The Cougars defense was once again led by sophomore
Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas). The sophomore libero racked up 24 digs. Sophomore
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township) did her part on defense also, notching 16 digs while adding 12 kills for her first double-double of the season.
The Cougars benefited from 10 aces and only six service errors. Freshman
Alyssa Podwell (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) recorded three aces.
Youngstown State recap
Van Munster was at it again in the nightcap, hitting .625 with a match-high 11 kills against the Penguins. However Chicago State couldn't shut down the Youngstown State offense as the Penguins out-hit the Cougars .410 to .051. The win gives Youngstown State the Coppin State Invitational title.
Chicago State is now 2-7. The Cougars are back in action on Friday (Sept. 7) at Miami (Ohio).
