CHICAGO – Senior
Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) hit .565 with a career-high 13 kills and no errors while adding four blocks (one solo) in Chicago State volleyball's 3-1 (27-25, 25-19, 14-25, 25-18) loss to Judson in the Cougars' 2012 home opener on Tuesday (Aug. 28) evening.
Van Munster wasn't the only Cougar in double-digits as sophomore
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township) added 11 kills. However on the other side of the net, Judson's Carissa Oeike recorded a double-double of 22 kills and 17 digs to lift the Eagles to the win.
Chicago State dropped the first two sets despite an impressive comeback in game one. Down 24-18, Chicago State fended off six set points to take a 25-24 lead. The run came with sophomore
Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) serving. Townsell had one of her two aces in the match during the stretch. A kill by Oeike turned away Chicago State's only set point of the fame. Point 27 for the Eagles came in heartbreaking fashion for the Cougars as Judson's Kristen Kohlstedt recorded a dig and saw her pass fly out of control over the net. Luckily for Kohlstedt, but not Chicago State, it happened to find a corner of the floor on Chicago State's side that no Cougar could reach.
The Cougars came out of the intermission fired up in the third set, scoring multiple points on six occasions. The Cougars went on a 10-0 stretch late in the frame with Townsell serving.
Townsell finished with 14 digs.
Judson improves to 4-1 with the win. Chicago State falls to 0-5. Chicago State heads to the Coppin State Invitational this weekend. The Cougars will play North Carolina A&T and Bryant on Friday.
