IOWA CITY, Iowa – Chicago State volleyball dropped a pair of contests on Friday (Aug. 24) at the Hawkeye Classic to open the 2012 season. The Cougars opened the afternoon with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-13) defeat at the hands of Iowa. CSU then fell 25-8, 25-15, 25-14 to Valparaiso in the nightcap.

Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) led the Cougars with six kills and three block assists. The Townsell sisters each recorded double-digit digs. Junior
Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) added 14 while
Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) recorded 10.
Chicago State had 14 kills in the opening set. It was 16-10 score in favor of the Hawkeyes when head coach Bob Eskew asked for time. The Cougars responded by scoring five straight points, cutting the Hawkeyes lead to a single point. However, a 5-0 Iowa run down the stretch gave the Hawkeyes the opening set. The Hawkeyes took the momentum to the second and third sets.

Van Munster was the kills leader for the Cougars once again in the evening, recording six kills against the Crusaders.
Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) added 14 digs in the contest. She also notched an ace.
The second set was the closest, featuring five ties and two lead changes. Back-to-back kills by sophomore
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township) helped CSU to a quick 3-1 lead. The Crusaders pulled away 7-0 push to make the score 17-7. The Cougars responded with a four straight points but couldn't get any closer than six points.
Desiderio totaled nine digs in each match.
“We had some really great play today from Sydney and Valeria,” head coach Bob Eskew said. “We played two quality teams today and we're getting great experience. We had streaks were we played really well, but we relaxed and it hurt us.”
Chicago State is now 0-2.
