TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Jamere Dismukes (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East/BlackHawk College) scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to help Chicago State men's basketball defeat Toledo 58-53 on Monday (Dec. 31) afternoon at Savage Arena. Toledo was the preseason pick to win the Mid-American Conference West Division. Two days earlier the Rockets knocked off UIC by 19 points.

“This is a great win for us,” Chicago State head coach Tracy Dildy said. “Jamere put the team on his back and we made some big free throws at the end.”

Toledo scored the first two points of the second half to take a 25-17 advantage. However back-to-back 3-pointers by junior Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) (Dixon, Ill./Dixon/Sauk Valley CC) and junior Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) (Hamburg, Ark./ Hamburg/Missouri State-West Plains CC) knotted the score at 29 at the 14:25 mark. Toledo's Reese Holliday converted a pair of free throws at 6:16 to put the Rockets back up 45-38. Then the Cougars came alive, outscoring Toledo 14-2 over the next four minutes. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dismukes advanced the Cougars within a point at 45-44. Another 3-pointer by Dismukes tied it at 47 with 3:17 remaining. Ross followed with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by junior Nate Duhon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) (Lansing, Mich./Sexton/Lansing CC) put Chicago State up 52-47 with 1:50 left. Toledo cut it to 52-51 thanks to two free throws only to see Dismukes nail a jump shot to put the Cougars back up by three points with under a minute to play. Sophomore Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) and Pippen each made a pair of free throws down the stretch to ice the contest.

“We had a tough loss at Ohio State on Saturday but the guys kept their focus today even after falling behind,” Dildy said. “They didn't give up and wanted to finish the year on a winning note.”

Dismukes scored his 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting beyond the arc. Ross added 12 points. Pippen scored 11 points.

Chicago State shot just 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the floor, but limited the Rockets to only 31.3 percent (15-of-48) shooting.

“I'm really proud of the guys,” Dildy said. “It's one of the best team victories I've been a part of.”

The win is Chicago State's first over a MAC school since defeating Central Michigan on Nov. 20, 2008 84-74.

Toledo falls to 4-7. The Cougars improve to 4-12. Chicago State travels to No. 24 UNLV on Thursday in a 9 p.m. CT contest.
