Nate Duhon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) (Lansing, Mich./Sexton/Lansing CC) scored a career-high 18 points for the Cougars.
“One year ago Oregon State beat us by 30 at home, this year we had a great effort and I think it shows how far we've come,” Chicago State head coach
Tracy Dildy said. “We still lost so we have some things to correct, but I'm proud of the effort even when we did get down.”
It was quick start for the Cougars, taking a 17-11 lead in the first five minutes. Oregon State followed with seven consecutive points to take the lead 18-17. The score went back and forth until the Beavers stretched their halftime lead to 44-36. Oregon State could never quite shake the Cougars in the second half, ultimately topping Chicago State by 10 points.
The Beavers forced 16 Chicago State turnovers, and took advantage in a big way by holding a 23-11 edge in points off turnovers. Oregon State also found more success at the foul line than the Cougars. Oregon State made 21-of-35 foul shots compared to Chicago State's 7-of-9 performance at the line.
“Statistically, it was even, it really came down to the free throws and you have to give them credit,” Dildy said. “Oregon State is well coached and they are going to make some noise in the Pac 12.”
Both teams shot 8-of-17 from beyond the arc. Junior
Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg/Missouri State-West Plains CC) made 3-of-5 attempts from long range. Pippen scored all 13 of his points in the first half.
Chicago State falls to 3-9. Oregon State improves to 7-2. The Cougars travel to Houston, Texas on Wednesday (Dec. 16) to face Rice at 7:00 p.m. CT.
