OREM, Utah. – Chicago State volleyball saw their season come to a close on Friday (Nov. 16) morning following a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) loss to NJIT in the 2012 Great West Conference Volleyball Tournament. Chicago State was the No. 5 seed while NJIT held the No. 4 seed.
Senior
Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) hit .625 with a match-high 16 kills for Chicago State.
The opening set featured eight ties and four lead changes. Chicago State fell behind 10-3 only to come roaring back to knot it at 12 thanks to a 9-2 run. Van Munster had four kills in the stretch. It was tied at 20 when NJIT earned some breathing room with kills by Danica Vukotic and Valerie Carroll to make it 22-20. A Van Munster kill turned away NJIT's first set point at 24-22. However a kill by NJIT's Janet Snell with the score 24-23 made the set one final score 25-23.
In the second, a late Chicago State 4-0 run with junior
Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) serving put Chicago State within one point at 22-21. Three consecutive NJIT kills put the set in the column of the Highlanders.
It was déjà vu in third set. NJIT built a lead only to have Chicago State rally late to make the score 22-20. It wouldn't be enough as the Highlanders finished off the match by scoring three of the set's final four points.
Townsell, named an All-GWC Second Team honoree on Thursday night, finished with 20 digs.
Snell led NJIT with 11 kills.
NJIT improves to 12-15. The Highlanders will face overall No. 1 seed Houston Baptist tonight.
The Cougars conclude the 2012 season with a 2-30 record.
