CHICAGO – Three Cougars finished with double-digit kills in Chicago State volleyball's 3-1 (25-15, 16-25, 25-13, 25-11) non-conference loss to Valparaiso on Tuesday (Oct. 30) evening at the Jacoby Dickens Center.

Freshman Alyssa Podwell (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) and sophomore Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) each chipped in 11 kills for the Cougars. Desiderio also added 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo/Martin Methodist College) also had a double-double with 14 assists and 10 kills. Sioto now has a double-double to go with her two triple-doubles this season.

Chicago State was able to knot the match at one set apiece thanks to a nine-point victory in the second frame. It was all Chicago State from the start thanks to a 9-0 Cougars run to open the set. The push made Valparaiso use both of their timeouts. Desiderio had two kills and a block assist in the run. The 9-0 start came thanks to the serving of sophomore Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas). The Cougars out-hit the Crusaders .394 to .108 in the set while Desiderio had six kills in the frame.

The Cougars couldn't keep the momentum going as Valparaiso rebounded to win the next two frames.

Townsell led the Cougars with 15 digs. Sophomore Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) tied for a match high with 23 assists.

"The second set shows the potential for what we can do," Chicago State head coach Bob Eskew said. "I was very proud of them. We're looking for this kind of consistency every time."

The match featured three ties, but zero lead changes.

The Crusaders improve to 17-10. Chicago State falls to 2-26. The Cougars take a week of rest before returning to the Jacoby Dickens Center on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Western Illinois. The non-conference match will start at 7 p.m.
