This Week: Chicago State volleyball team travels to the north suburbs Tuesday night for a non-conference road contest versus Judson University at JU's Lindner Fitness Center in Elgin, Ill. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
Scouting Chicago State: CSU heads into Elgin after opening the season last weekend at the Indiana State Quality Inn/ASICS Classic in Terre Haute, Ind. The Cougars fell to the host Sycamores, Eastern Illinois, and Miami (Ohio) in three sets, while dropping a thrilling five-set battle to Coppin State. Junior outside hitter Rachel Levitt (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) currently averages 2.36 kills per set to lead CSU in addition to posting 1.71 digs a set, while freshman setter Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) has posted 3.71 assists and 1.21 digs and senior middle blocker Alexandra Mason (Beaverton, OR/Harper College) is producing a team-leading 0.71 blocks per set. Sophomore libero Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) has tallied an average of 3.97 digs per set to lead the Green and White's defense.
Scouting Judson: Judson, a NAIA school, returns 13 players from last season's squad that finished 3-19 overall and 3-8 mark in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles' top returning player is junior outside hitter Carissa Oelke, who earned all-region honors from the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) after averging 3.09 digs and 2.77 kills per set in 2010. Other top players coming back this season for Judson are sophomore outside hitter Kylee Koon (2.30 digs per set, 1.64 kills per set) and junior middle hitter Karissa Groharing (1.34 kills per set, 0.62 blocks per set).
Townsell Earns All-Tournament Honors at ISU: Sophomore libero Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) received all-tournament team accolades following the Indiana State Quality Inn/ASICS Classic last weekend after producing 53 digs (3.79 dps) last weekend to lead CSU. The 5-foot-5 native of Gardnerville, Nev., tallied 19 digs against Coppin State on Aug. 26 and followed that the next morning with 17 digs versus Eastern Illinois.
Up Next: CSU heads to Virginia this weekend to compete in the Radford Tournament. The Cougars open tournament play Friday afternoon against UMKC beginning at 3 p.m.
