TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Chicago State volleyball rebounded from its season-opening match with a thrilling battle in its second contest of the Quality Inn/ASICS Classic, hosted by Indiana State, but fell to Coppin State in five sets (25-22, 21-25, 28-26, 19-25, 17-15) this afternoon at ISU Arena.
The Eagles evened their season record to 1-1 and the Cougars fell to 0-2 on the year.
Chicago State was paced by junior Rachel Levitt (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) (Willow Springs, Ill.), who nearly tallied a double-double with 13 kills, nine digs and added three service aces. Junior Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich.) recorded 11 kills and three service aces, while senior Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Harare, Zimbabwe) added 11 kills and senior Alexandra Mason (Beaverton, OR/Harper College) (Beaverton, Ore.) notched seven kills with four blocks.
Sophomore Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev.) posted 19 digs, freshman Emily Kramolisch (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) (Bolingbrook, Ill.) had 19 assists, freshman Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied 17 assists, and freshman Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev.) contributed 12 digs for the Cougars.
Junior Janka Schmitt produced a match-leading 14 kills to pace Coppin State. Freshman Ariel Richard had a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs, while junior Kristine Bindule dished out 42 assists, and freshman Gabrielle Otero posted 26 digs and four service aces.
CSU returns to action at ISU Arena tomorrow with two more matches beginning at 9:30 a.m. against Eastern Illinois before closing the tournament versus Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m.
