CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball kicked off its 2011-12 season here Saturday afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation with a 79-59 exhibition win over visiting Roosevelt.
CSU opened the second half with a 24-6 scoring drive in a 10-plus minute span, led by five points from graduate student forward Lee Fisher (Dolton, IL/Northern Illinois) (Dolton, Ill.) and junior forward Jeremy Robinson (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower) (Decatur, Ill.), that turned a slim 34-29 halftime lead to a 56-36 advantage with 9:08 remaining in the game. The Green and White scored 23 of the final 43 points in the final nine minutes for the win.
Three CSU players scored in double figures against the Lakers with Fisher and Robinson each scoring 20 points and added eight rebounds. Robinson also posted game highs of five blocked shots and five steals, and Fisher recorded a game-high five assists. Junior Matt Samuels (Washington, DC/South Suburban College) (Washington, D.C.) contributed 13 points and equaled Fisher for game-high assist honors with five.
Freshman Elliott Vaughn paced Roosevelt with 18 points, while fellow classmate Odera Eneogwe tallied a double-double of 12 points and a game-leading 11 rebounds. Senior Paul Tometich also recorded 12 points with four steals, three rebounds and three assists.
The Cougars return to exhibition play this Monday night with a contest against St. Ambrose at the Jones Convocation Center beginning at 7:05 p.m.
