CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball received a career-high 20 points from senior Jonathon Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Northern Iowa) (Chicago, Ill.) as the host Cougars began Great West Conference play here today with a 93-82 loss to visiting Utah Valley at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
The Wolverines improved to 8-8 (1-0) with the win, while the Cougars dropped to 3-14 (0-1) on the year.
Montgomery, who eclipsed his previous career-high point total of 19 points set last season against Northern Illinois, also connected on all five of his attempts from the free throw line and three shots from three-point range. Senior Carl Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Shepard) (Chicago, Ill), the reigning GWC Player of the Week, added 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and a game-high three blocked shots.
Senior Antonio Lofton (Chicago, IL/Parkland College) (Chicago, Ill.) recorded 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while senior Archie Seals (Chicago, IL/Thornridge) (Chicago, Ill.) posted a pair of career highs with seven points and three rebounds.
Leading five Utah Valley players in double figures was junior Isiah Williams as he scored a game-high 22 points that included going 9-of-13 from the free throw line.
Senior Justin Baker scored 14 points, while freshmen Ben Aird and Holton Hunsaker contributed 12 points apiece. Junior Geddes Robinson recorded a double-double of a game-leading 13 rebounds and 11 points.
The Cougars continue their four-game homestand at the Dickens Center Thursday night with a Great West contest against Houston Baptist beginning at 7:30 p.m.
