CHICAGO (Nov. 14, 2009) – Chicago State volleyball concluded its regular season and Great West Conference schedules Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-9) loss to visiting NJIT at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
The Cougars dropped to 0-25 (0-12) on the year following the defeat, while the Highlanders improved their season record to 17-10 (7-5).
CSU's four seniors – Shamara Clark (Bloomington, IN/South) (Bloomington, Ind.), Jean Keenan (/) (Braidwood, Ill.), Niena Posey (Chicago, IL/Lincoln College) (Chicago Heights, Ill.) and Jessica Schmidt (Walnut Hill, IL/Kaskaskia College) (Walnut Hills, Ill.) – were honored in a senior day ceremony during intermission and were recognized for their contributions to the program.
Sophomore Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.) recorded five kills and junior Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) posted 13 assists to lead CSU's offense. Minta, senior Jean Keenan (/) (Braidwood, Ill.) and freshman Rashonda Woods (Chicago, IL/Simeon) (Chicago, Ill.) each tallied six digs, while freshman Kimberly Naut (Reno, NV/Galena) (Reno, Nev.) added four kills
NJIT was led by sophomore Renata Pandolfo's match-high 19 kills and five service aces, while senior Erica Schultz recorded a match-best 35 assists. Junior Baaba Hughes added nine kills and senior Katrina Hornstein posted eight kills for the Highlanders.
CSU travels to Houston next weekend to compete in the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament, hosted by Houston Baptist at Sharp Gym, as all seven conference teams will battle to become the conference's first-ever tournament champion.
