KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Chicago State track and field opened day one at the Tennessee Invite with multiple Cougars opening against strong competition. A smaller group also went to Muncie, Indiana for day one of the We Fly Challenge.
The Cougars opened the day in the men's 1500 meters where Denis Kirui led the group with a 16th-place finish in 3:56.45. Jacob Draaisma followed closely behind, placing 19th with a time of 3:58.19.
In the women's 200 meters, Latonia Johnson paced Chicago State with a time of 25.46 to place 48th. Phebe Thompson finished 53rd in 25.60, while Jaya Harrigan crossed the line in 26.03 to place 64th. On the men's side, Carlton Montgomery Jr. led the Cougars with a time of 22.18 to place 62nd. Eric Sanchez followed in 75th at 22.39, and Kai Sheridan finished 84th with a mark of 22.72.
Chicago State saw standout performances in the hurdles as Katherine Thornton placed 12th in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.00. On the men's side, Nasir Ali recorded a top-10 finish, placing 10th with a time of 54.06, while Michael Rabogo added a 16th-place finish in 54.84.
In the field events, Kendrick Scott delivered one of the top finishes of the day for the Cougars, placing ninth in the men's discus with a throw of 47.76 meters. Lena Cleveland posted a strong performance in the women's triple jump, finishing 17th with a mark of 11.59 meters, while Khalis Reyes placed 12th in the men's triple jump with a jump of 14.38 meters.
Bryanna Boroze added a 17th-place finish in the women's discus with a throw of 34.73 meters, while Demya McClure recorded a mark of 37.69 meters in the women's hammer to place 24th. Taylor Norris rounded out the field events with a throw of 25.45 meters to place 15th in the women's javelin.
Some Cougars went to Muncie Indiana for the We Fly Challenge. Joshua Keaton led the Cougars on the men's side with a 14th-place finish in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 46.48 meters. On the women's side, Alexis Fallejo represented Chicago State in the high jump, clearing 1.45 meters to place 15th overall.
