STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Chicago State track and field team opened up action at the 2025 NEC Indoor Track Championships on Sunday and after the first day of competition the women sit in seventh place with nine points and the men are in fifth place with 10 points.
Freshman Skyler McGhee earned the first-ever NEC championship gold medal talking first place in the long jump with a jump of 7.22m edging out Wagner's Jack Mason who jumped a 7.15m to take the silver medal. Teammates Nikai McNee and Eric Sanchez just missed scoring placing ninth (6.52m) and 10th (6.50m), respectfully.
Lena Cleveland scored on the women's side as well, placing second in the long jump with a jump of 5.66m. Latonia Jackson jumped a 5.24 to finish 8th to add a point to the Cougars score. Myshell Hurse jumped a 5.15m to placed 12th and Santa Ross placed 18th with a jump of 5.04m.
The CSU sprinters had a good day in qualifying. In the 60m hurdles the trio of Mychah Spells, Ishan Cooper and Raymond Oriakhi all reached the finals.
The women's field for the finals will be comprised of four Cougars as Rachel Whyte, Sanaa Parker, Queanna Taylor and Latonia Johnson each reached the finals. Parker enters the finals with a seeded time of 7.59 - the fastest in the field
Parker, Whyte, Hurse and Rikki Gray will all advance to the 400m final while Whyte, OParker and Hurse will compete in the 200m final. Whyte and Parker have two fastest times in the field running 24.72 and 24.85, respectively. Zearra Milburn will run the 500m final.
Oriakhi will also race in the finals of the 200m and 400m while Trevon price will represent the Cougars in the 500m. Eric Sanchez will also compete in the 200m finals.
The men's 4x400 relay will be must see action as the Cougars will go head to head with Central Connecticut for the top spot as they are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 by time. The women's 4x400m will be equally as impressive as the Cougars enter with the top time.
