Box Score Purdue Fort Wayne broke open a tight game with an 18-5 third-quarter run to get past Chicago State 102-76 Tuesday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter but battled back to trail by just two and took a lead in the second before the Mastodons pulled away in the third for the 26-point victory.
Chicago State had five players in double figures led by
Taylor Norris with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Tae'lor Willard added 18 points,
Evangelina Parrish and
Hailey Hohenecker each had 12 and
Josie Hill contributed 11.Â
The Mastodons opened the scoring with a three and led the entire first quarter and built the margin to 10 points before the Cougars went on a 10-2 run with contributions from
Tae'lor Willard,
Evangelina Parrish,
Hailey Hohenecker and
Josie Hill to cut the margin to two by the end of first, 22-20. Chicago State opened the second quarter with a 4-0 run to tie and take their first lead, 24-22, behind back-to-back Parrish scores. At that point the Mastodons staged a 10-2 run to go up six before Hohenecker hit a three to start a 10-0 run and Chicago State led by four, 36-32 with 2:37 remaining until half. Purdue Fort Wayne ended the quarter with a 10-0 run and went into the locker room at halftime up six, 42-36.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the second half with a
Taylor Norris jumper but the Mastodons went on an 18-5 run and outscored the Cougars 29-17 to lead by 18 at the end of the third quarter, 71-53. Norris opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a 5-0 run on her own to cut the margin to 13 but the Mastodons responded with a 7-0 run to build their largest lead of the game, 20 points, 78-58.
The Cougars will be back in action Monday, February 5 taking on future NEC foe Long Island University at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn, New York. That game will be the final road game of the season for the Cougars who will then return to wrap up the regular season on February 20 at home against Eastern Kentucky.
