Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team beat FDU 75-74 Wednesday night at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, New Jersey in a Northeast Conference preview. CSU led by 15 points with 5:35 remaining to play when the host Knights reeled off a 14-0 run and eventually tied the game, 72-72, with just over a minute to play. The teams exchanged buckets with FDU pulling even with just :08 left but
Noble Crawford sealed the win with a free throw just before time expired for the one-point victory.
The Cougars used a balanced scoring attack led by a career and season-high 19 points from Crawford who was one of four CSU players in double figures.
A.J. Neal added 14,
Jahsean Corbett 13 and
Brent Davis 11 while Crawford also led the team in rebounds with nine, including six on the offensive end.
The Knights held the early advantage and led most of the first half and by as many as seven points before
Tristan Arneaud hit a three to start a 9-0 Cougars run capped by a
Noble Crawford three and CSU led 20-18 at the 8:29 mark. The game was then tied on four different occasions before Crawford and
A.J. Neal each hit threes to go along with a Neal layup and CSU led by six, 35-29. FDU pulled within three with under a minute remaining in the first half and
Brent Davis hit a three to give Chicago State a 42-36 halftime lead.
A.J. Neal opened the scoring in the second half with a three and Chicago State had their largest lead of the game, nine points, 45-36. Trailing by that same margin, 52-43, FDU reeled off nine consecutive points capped by a dunk and the game was tied 52-52 with 12:37 remaining in regulation. CSU led by one, 56-55, when Crawford started a 15-0 Cougars run with a three, followed by a Crawford dunk off a
Brent Davis assist who then hit a three. Crawford slammed down another dunk followed by a pair of
Deshawn Jean-Charles free throws and a
Jahsean Corbett three and CSU had a 15-point lead, 71-55, with 5:35 left to play in regulation.Â
The Cougars are playing as an independent this season and will join the NEC for the 2024-25 season while FDU represented the conference in the NCAA tournament a season ago and made national headlines becoming just the second No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 with a 63-58 victory over Purdue.
The Cougars will be back in action Monday, January 15 at Stetson in DeLand, Florida at The J. Ollie Edmunds Center. The two teams played earlier this year in Chicago where the Cougars earned a 77-54 victory.
