Cougars MBB Fall at Ohio U 76-59

Cougars Host East-West University January 9

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team had a nine-minute first-half field goal drought and made just one of 13 first-half three pointers to fall behind at Ohio U Friday and went on to drop a 76-59 decision to the Bobcats at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. The game was the seventh consecutive road game for the Cougars who will now enjoy their longest break of the season, getting back on the court January 9, 2023, hosting East-West University at the Jones Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The game will be just the fourth home game of the season for Chicago State who are undefeated at the JCC with wins over IUPUI, Valparaiso and Southern Indiana.

Elijah Weaver led Chicago State with 15 points and Wesley Cardet was the only other Cougars player in double figures with 13. Jahsean Corbett led all players with 14 rebounds, five on the offensive end. Tristan Arneaud scored four points, his first collegiate points.

1st Half - Ohio 42, Chicago State 23
Bryce Johnson opened the scoring with a driving layup and an early 2-0 CSU lead
Ohio scored on back-to-back possessions and made two free throws to lead 6-2
Jahsean Corbett then knocked down a stepback jumper and scored following an offensive rebound to knot the game 6-6 at the 16:49 mark
The Bobcats then converted threes on back-to-back possessions to go back up six, 12-6
Tristan Arneaud scored his first collegiate points for CSU on a fast break but the Cougars went cold at that point
Ohio went on an 11-0 run and Chicago State failed to score from the field for nine minutes, scoring five points from the free throw line as the Bobcats extended the run to 19-5 and Ohio led 31-13 at the 6:59 mark
Brent Davis converted a layup followed by an Elijah Weaver three to cut the lead to 13, 31-18, with 5:55 remaining
Ohio mounted another run, this one 8-2, and the Bobcats lead was 19, 39-20 at the 3:03 mark
Arol Kacoul knocked down a hook shot followed by an Ohio three and Cardet free throw to close out the first half scoring

2nd Half - Ohio 34, Chicago State 36
Ohio scored the first eight points of the second half, six coming from the free throw line to extend the lead to 27, 50-23
Chicago State finally scored at the 16:22 mark on a Corbett second-chance layup followed by a Weaver three and Arneaud layup for a modest 7-0 run to cut the lead to 20 with 15:05 remaining in the game
Ohio got out to their largest lead, 26 points, following a 9-0 run and led 67-41 with 7:49 left to play
The Bobcats had a 7-1 run to go up 29, 74-45 at the 3:46 mark
The Cougars battled back with a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 17 with under a minute to play, 74-57 with 47 seconds remaining

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
