Chicago State Women’s Tennis Falls to St. Louis 4-0

Cougars Have One Regular Season Match Remaining Before the Conference Tournament

Box Score Homewood, IL — The Chicago State women's tennis team lost to St. Louis University 4-0 Sunday morning at Homewood-Floosmoor. Three singles matches were still on the court when St. Louis clinched the team win and play was suspended in each without a winner.

St. Louis won the doubles team point as Chicago State defaulted at No. 3 and Kristina Pukhaeva and Katarina Drazic lost 6-3 at No. 1. The No. 2 doubles match was suspended with Sofiya Sedovich and Susana Andres ahead in the match 5-4 when the team was clinched and play was stopped.

"It was a tough match today," associate head coach Wyatt Pauley said. "Saint Louis is a well-coached team and we just didn't get the points we needed. All the women fought hard in both the doubles and singles courts but we still came up short."

The Billikens earned three consecutive victories in singles to clinch the team win. Chicago State defaulted at No. 6 and Pukhaeva lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Dukic dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 4 and St. Louis had an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Sedovich (No. 2), Drazic (No. 3) and Andres (No. 5) were all still in the second set of their respective matches when St. Louis earned the victory.

"There were a lot of positives that we took away from today's match," Pauley said. "This will help us prepare for Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday and, more importantly, for Seattle at the conference tournament.

The team will wrap up regular season play against Cardinal Stritch (April 27) before going to the WAC Tournament, scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Cougars are the fourth seed and will take on No. 5 Seattle U. The two teams played April 1 in Edinburg, Tex., and the Cougars earned a 4-3 win despite defaulting at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. A Cougars win would propel them into a semifinal matchup against No. 1 Grand Canyon, May 1 at 10 a.m.
