Women’s Tennis Drops 4-3 Thriller to Omaha

Borodina earns seventh consecutive win; second of season at No. 1 singles

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOR, Ill. – The Chicago State women's tennis team played a tight match with the Omaha Mavericks but fell just short in a, 4-3, match on Friday evening at Homewood-Flossmor Racquet and Fitness. Sophomore Diana Borodina (Moscow, Russia), played at No. 1 singles and ran her unbeaten streak to seven consecutive matches with a straight sets victory.

The visiting Mavericks picked up the early advantage by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Cougars dominated the top half of the lineup earning wins at No.1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Borodina, who's had the hot racket, played up a spot at No. 1 and dominated as she has been doing at No. 2 singles. The Moscow, Russia native won the first set 6-4 and despite needing a tiebreaker won her seventh straight match with a 7-6(2) win in the second set. Borodina is a combined 7-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and 8-2 in her last 10 matches.

Kristina Pukhaeva (Vladikavkaz, Georgia/No. 98 Public School) got back to her winning ways at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 7-6(2) win at No. 2 while Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) picked up her fourth consecutive win at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Omaha's Natalie Lonentz. Drazic has now won her last five matches and is 6-2 at No. 3.

Lizi Morgoshia (Tblisi, Georgia/No. 35 Public School) had a battle on her hands at No. 5 singles and went the distance. Morgoshia won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second and third sets 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Mavericks.
