Cougars Go 1-2 Over Three-Match Span

CHICAGO -- To close out the regular season of WAC play, the Chicago State Cougars hosted three consecutive matches last week, playing host to UMKC, New Mexico State and Grand Canyon.

Over the three-game span, the Cougars went 1-2 including a dominant 6-1 victory over New Mexico State and a hard fought, 4-3 loss to Kansas City.

VS. GRAND CANYON
Against the Lopes, the Cougars had a tall task ahead. With the dominant 6-1 win over CSU, Grand Cayon clinched its second WAC title in three years. Cougar Katrina Drazic was the bright spot of the day, defeating Celia Morel in the #2 singles.

VS. NEW MEXICO STATE
CSU reversed roles on Saturday against the Aggies. Defeating NMSU 6-1, the Cougars took 2-of-3 doubles matches, thanks to strong performances from the pairs of Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School)/Anastasia Goncharova and Drazic/Diana Borodina. Chicago State was incredible during its singles matches too, sweeping the Aggie competition entirely. Individually, Drazic, Goncharova, Borodina, Shepherd, Kristina Pukhaeva (Vladikavkaz, Georgia/No. 98 Public School) and Lizi Morgoshia (Tblisi, Georgia/No. 35 Public School) all picked up victories.

VS. UMKC (RESULTS)
The Cougars dropped a hard fought match against the Roos on Sunday morning. CSU started off the day strong, taking the doubles point off wins from the duos of Drazic/Borodina and Morgoshia/Pukhaeva. Heading into the singles matches with momentum, Chicago State's Goncharova came out strong with the first singles win of the day. However, after that the Roo's bounced back to win the next two matches. From there, Borodina won her singles match, but two more UMKC wins would seal the deal on their 4-3 WAC win.

The Cougars will return to action next Wednesday, April 17 to take on Valparaiso in Indiana before heading to the WAC tournament in Edinburg, Texas at the end of April.
