CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's tennis team defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies yesterday, 6-1, after a complete team effort.
The Cougars were quick to steal the doubles point on the day and stayed consistent all day long, winning five out of six of the singles match ups. The duos of Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia/) (Smolensk, Russia) and Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) and Diana Berodina (Moscow, Russia) and Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) (Sarasota, Fla./ Elevation Prep.) won their respective doubles matches, 6-0 and 6-2. On the singles side, Kristina Pukhaeva (Vladikavkaz, Georgia/No. 98 Public School) (Vladikavkaz, Georgia / No. 98 Public School), Drazic, Berodina, Shepherd and Lizi Morgoshia (Tblisi, Georgia/No. 35 Public School) (Tblisi, Georgia/No. 35 Public School) each came away with a victory.
"We didn't get off to the greatest start this season so after the Wright State match we had to reset our goals and expectations," said Head Coach Jack Barton. "Now that the girls are trusting the process they are beginning to see the fruit of their hard work. The last two weeks have been great. Practices have been focused and filled with a lot of energy. When it's time the play the matches the girls can take what they have learned and use it and it showed against NIU."
CSU returns to action next weekend at Bradley in Peoria, Ill.
