Cougars Conclude WAC Play with 4-3 Comeback Win at Seattle

Freshman Katarina Drazic won at No. 5 singles against Seattle to clinch Saturday's match for CSU

SEATTLE – The Chicago State women's tennis concluded its Western Athletic Conference slate by posting a 4-3 comeback victory over host Seattle on Saturday at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in its final match of the second conference cluster of the season.

CSU swept the doubles part of the match by winning all three flights for an early 1-0 advantage that began with junior Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) tallying a 6-3 win over Kali McCollister and Lily-Ana Kreutzer at the No. 3 flight.

The No. 1 duo of senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) edged out Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman by a close 7-5 margin, while seniors Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) also captured a 7-5 win in the No. 2 flight over Hannah Gianan and Kyra Jung.

SU opened singles play with victories in the first, second and third flights to post a 3-1 lead, but the Cougars came back to win the match after taking the final three flights with two of those going to a deciding third set.

Gadacz knocked off Woodman in three sets at No. 4 by scores of 6-4, 1-6 and 6-4 followed by Shepherd defeating Kruetzer in straight sets via identical 6-3 scores.

Drazic clinched the match for the Green and White after she posted a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4) victory in the No. 5 flight over McCollister.

CSU finishes off regular season play on April 18 with senior day at the CSU Tennis Courts against Valparaiso that begins at 2 p.m.
