Kostyuk and Drazic Capture Wins for Women Tennis against UTRGV in Seattle

SEATTLE – Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) captured two wins apiece to lead the Chicago State women's tennis team as it dropped a 5-2 decision to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to kick off the second Western Athletic Conference cluster here today at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.

Kostyuk and Drazic teamed up at the No. 1 doubles flight to record a 7-5 victory over Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra, but the Vaqueros captured the other two doubles contests for an early 1-0 advantage.

Junior Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) battled tough in their No. 3 match against Anastasia Belyaeva and Lasya Patnaik before falling by a score of 7-6 (5).

In singles play, Kostyuk earned a close win in her No. 1 flight match versus Dominique Esparza by scores of 7-6 (1) and 7-5. Drazic then posted a dominant victory over Doris Aleksovska at No. 4, winning via scores of 6-0 and 6-3.

Goncharova had a thrilling three-set showdown at the No. 2 flight versus Darzyan as she rebounded from a 7-5 defeat in the first set with a 6-3 win in the second set before losing a close 7-6 decision in the deciding third set.

CSU closes out WAC play tomorrow afternoon against host Seattle with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
