Women’s Tennis Heads to Seattle for Second WAC Cluster of the Season

Freshman Katarina Drazic and the CSU women's tennis team plays twice in Seattle this weekend for the second Western Athletic Conference cluster
CHICAGO – Chicago State women's tennis travels to Seattle this weekend to compete in a couple of matches for the second Western Athletic Conference cluster of the season at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
 
CSU (4-16, 0-3) begins the cluster on Friday morning against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a start time of 11 a.m. then close out conference play versus the host Redhawks on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
 
The Green and White enter the Emerald City looking to end conference play on a positive note following a week off from competition. CSU dropped all three of its contests at the first WAC cluster two weeks ago in Edinburg, Texas to Grand Canyon (0-7), New Mexico State (3-4) and UMKC (1-6).
 
Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School), freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) are now tied for first on the team in singles wins (nine) this season. Seniors Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) have produced a team-best doubles record of 12-7 which includes an 11-5 mark in dual matches.
 
UTRGV brings an 11-8 season record into this weekend's cluster after concluding its home schedule with a 10-0 record after last Saturday's 7-0 win over Laredo Community College. The top singles player for the Vaqueros is junior Dominique Ibarra with a 17-4 record and sophomore Anastasia Belyaeva ranks second with a 14-9 ledger. Redshirt junior Doris Aleksovska and senior Dominique Esparza leads UTRGV in doubles with a 10-1 record.
 
Seattle has amassed a 7-11 record on the year and the Redhawks snapped a three-match losing streak following last weekend's win at home over Whitman College by a 7-0 margin. Freshman Kyra Jung leads SU with a singles record of 15-12 while posting a 9-9 dual-match mark. Senior Michelle Lui and redshirt senior Kelli Woodman are the top doubles team with a 9-7 record at the No. 1 flight.
 
The Cougars close out their regular season schedule at the CSU Tennis Courts on April 18 with senior day against Valparaiso that begins at 2 p.m.
