Seniors Shine in Doubles Play as Cougars Close Season at WAC Tournament

MESA, Ariz. – Chicago State women's tennis saw its three senior student-athletes shine in doubles play earlier this morning as the Cougars dropped a 4-1 decision to host Grand Canyon in a Western Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match at the Mesa Tennis Center.

After dropping the No. 1 doubles flight to open the match, the Cougars bounced back to win the next two flights in gaining an early 1-0 advantage over the Lopes, but the home team captured the win after taking

Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) claimed their fourth straight doubles victory in the No. 3 flight after defeating Kylie Waschuk and Autum Prudhomme by a score of 6-2.

Seniors Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) followed that by earning a close 6-4 victory over GCU's No. 2 duo of Celina Buhr and Ludoica Infantino just a day removed from capturing First Team All-WAC honors.

Kostyuk closed her two-year CSU career ranking ninth on the school's Division I record book in doubles and claimed her second WAC Singles Player of the Week award earlier this week. She was a Second Team All-WAC selection in singles a year ago in addition to playing as the No. 1 singles player for the Cougars in the last two seasons, while claiming CSU Scholar-Athlete honors for the second year in a row.

Gadacz received All-WAC accolades for the first time yesterday as she captured first team honors along with Gamboa and ranks eighth on CSU's D-I doubles wins list to close her four-year career with the Green and White. She also earned a second-place finish in singles at the Bradley Fall Invitational as a sophomore, played singles at the No. 3 and No. 4 flights, and received CSU Scholar-Athlete honors in February.

Gamboa ended her four-year career at CSU by sitting in 10th place on the school's D-I records for most doubles victories while teaming this season with Gadacz to earn All-WAC First Team honors. She received WAC Player of the Month honors in October 2016 while playing between the second and fourth flights in singles this year. She also earned her fourth consecutive CSU Scholar-Athlete award.

GoCSUCougars.com wishes nothing but the best of luck to these ladies in their future endeavors.
