Chicago State Opens WAC Women’s Tennis Tournament Tomorrow Morning against Grand Canyon

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's tennis team heads to Arizona this weekend for the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Tournament held at the Mesa Tennis Center.

The fifth-seeded Cougars will take on the host and fourth seed Grand Canyon in the first match of the quarterfinals tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., central time.

CSU brings a 6-17 season record into the tournament and is on a two-match winning streak after capturing a 5-2 home victory over Valparaiso on April 18 in Homewood, Ill.

Freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) is the top singles player for the Green and White as she has produced a 12-7 record followed by senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and fellow freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) as both players have tallied 11 singles wins. Kostyuk was named the final WAC Player of the Week for the season earlier this week on Monday. Seniors Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) have teamed up this season to post a 13-9 record, including a 12-7 mark in dual matches.

Grand Canyon has amassed a record of 7-14 after it dropped a 6-1 decision at the GCU Tennis Facility in Phoenix to Northern Arizona on April 21. Senior Kylie Waschuk leads the Lopes in singles with a record of 19-12 that includes a 13-6 dual-match ledger, while sophomore Emilia Occhipinti and senior Lana Rinaldi is first on the team in doubles with a 15-8 record.

The winner of Friday's match advances to the semifinal round on Saturday against top-seeded UT Rio Grande Valley with a start time of 11 a.m.
