Smith Breaks 16-Year School Record at DePaul Invitational

Senior DiJon Smith broke CSU's 3,000-meter run school record today in finishing first at the DePaul Invitational

CHICAGO – Senior DiJon Smith (Gary, Ind./Westside) broke a 16-year school record in the 3,000-meter run as Chicago State track and field competed at the DePaul Invitational today at Lane Stadium.

Smith shaved over eight seconds off the previous record set in 2002 by John LaBranche as he finished first with a time of 8:55.42. This is the second record that he has captured during the outdoor season after gaining the 5,000-meter run record at the Texas Southern Relays last month.

Sophomore Ricordo McKenzie (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) earned a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash as he recorded a time of 22.48, while redshirt junior Donnie Hawkins (Chicago, Ill./Willowbrook) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 20-3.50 and senior Landis Houston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) recorded a mark of 44-7.50 to finish fourth in the triple jump.

On the women's side, senior Jocindra Glee (Orlando, Fla./Evans) posted a time of 56.75 to finish second in the 400-meter dash. Senior Asia Johnson (Guthrie, Okla./Guthrie) took third in the 100-meter hurdles as she finished with a time of 15.35 and freshman Ayo-Ola Sobowale (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) recorded a season-best throw of 124-9 to place fifth in the discus throw.

CSU is now idle from competition until May 9-12 for the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships that will take place from Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
