CSU Women’s Tennis Posts 5-2 Victory over Valparaiso on Senior Day

HOMEWOOD, Ill. – Chicago State women's tennis closed out its regular season slate here today at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club after it celebrated senior day by posting a 5-2 victory over Valparaiso.

The Green and White kicked off the day by capturing wins in two of the three doubles flights to record a 1-0 lead.

Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) made quick work of VU's Claire Czerwonka and Dao Sysouvanh at the No. 1 flight with a dominant 6-1 win. The Cougars' No. 3 tandem of junior Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) captured a 6-3 victory over Jordan Kopfer and Halle Roach.

Goncharova opened singles play for the home team as she took the No. 2 flight after battling to a 1-1 tie with Jelena Vujanic before Vujanic retired due to injury followed by Drazic recording a 6-4, 6-0 win in her No. 5 match against Randi Wind.

Shepherd earned 6-2, 6-2 win over Kopfer at No. 6 that clinched the match victory for Chicago State, while Kostyuk came back from dropping a 6-2 decision in the first set of her No. 1 flight contest against Czerwonka by claiming the second set by an identical 6-2 margin and took a close 11-9 win in the third set.

Kostyuk, Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) were honored in a pre-match ceremony for senior day in their final collegiate home match.

The Cougars head to Mesa, Ariz., next week for the Western Athletic Conference Championships that begins on April 27 with a quarterfinal match against host Grand Canyon with a start time of 11 a.m., central time.
