Women’s Tennis Falls to Grand Canyon, 7-0, in WAC Opener

EDINBURG, Texas
– Chicago State women's tennis fell to Grand Canyon here today in its Western Athletic Conference opener by a score of 7-0 at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Antelopes won all three doubles flights to open the match with an early 1-0 lead before capturing victories in all six singles contests for the victory.
 
Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) played a tightly contested match in the No. 1 flight against Lana Rinaldi and Emilia Occhipinti before falling by a 6-4 margin.
 
Kostyuk later dropped a three-set battle at No. 1 singles to Martina Lo Pumo via scores of 3-6, 6-2 and 6-3, while junior Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia) fell in the No. 2 flight to Rinaldi by scores of 4-6, 6-4 and 10-3. In the No. 5 flight, Drazic dropped a tough battle with GCU's Celina Buhr in straight sets with close scores of 7-5 and 6-4.
 
The Green and White will take on New Mexico State in their second match of this weekend's cluster at the Cox Tennis Center tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
