Women’s Tennis Slips Past Detroit Mercy, 4-3, to Break Skid

Iesha Shepherd earned a three-set win at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for CSU at Detroit Mercy

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Chicago State women's tennis team broke a four-match losing skid after slipping past host Detroit Mercy by a close 4-3 margin here today at the Franklin Athletic Center.

CSU won the final two doubles flights to take a 1-0 advantage early in the match after falling in the No. 3 flight.

Seniors Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) posted a dominating 6-1 victory in the No. 2 flight over Iris Thioux and Ksenia Providokhina. Junior Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) later defeated Chelsea Apawti and Jasmine Apawti by a close score of 7-5 in the No. 1 flight.

Both teams earned a split through the six singles matches with the Cougars gained the win.

Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) posted a win at No. 1 over Thioux via scores of 7-6 (3) and 6-3, while Goncharova recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Chelsea Apawti in the No. 5 flight. Shepherd went on to beat Pauline Van Herck in three sets by scores of 7-5, 3-6 and 6-4 at No. 4 in the match clincher.

CSU returns to Homewood, Ill., to kick off a three-match homestand at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Center on Feb. 13 against UIC with a start time of 10 a.m.
