Shepherd Earns Two Singles Wins as CSU Women’s Tennis Earns Split at Home

HOMEWOOD, Ill. – Freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) earned a pair of singles wins here today in helping the Chicago State women's tennis team earn a split in a home doubleheader with a 5-2 loss to Eastern Illinois and a 7-0 win over Purdue Northwest at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club.
 
CSU captured two of the three doubles flights for an early 1-0 lead in the EIU match.
 
Seniors Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) recorded a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 flight over Karla Contreras and Abby Carpenter while the No. 2 tandem of senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Katarina Drazic (Sarasota, Fla./Elevation Preparatory Academy) also defeated Claire Martin and Emily Pugachevsky by a margin of 6-3.
 
The Panthers responded by winning five of the six singles contests to record the victory with Shepherd posting CSU's lone win thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Contreras at No. 4.
 
A sweep in all three doubles contest helped the Green and White take a 1-0 advantage to kick off the PNW match.
 
Kostyuk and Drazic tallied a 6-0 win at No. 2 against Carolina Yepez and Pia Schmedding followed by Gamboa and Gadacz recording a 6-0 win of their own while defeating Cynthia Besu-Chavez and Abby Kvachoff in the No. 3 flight. Junior Anastasiia Goncharova (Smolensk, Russia) and Shepherd edged out the duo of Brooke Foltz and Lara van Bergan at No. 1 by a score of 7-5.
 
CSU continued on in singles play by sweeping all six flights in straight sets that began with Shepherd defeating Basu-Chavez by identical 6-0 scores in the No. 5 match.
 
Drazic concluded her day with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Kvachoff followed by Goncharova winning at No. 4 against Anna Wachowski via a pair of 6-0 sets.
 
Gadacz defeated Schmedding by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 at No. 4, Gamboa posted a 6-0, 6-4 win in her No. 2 match versus Foltz, and Kostyuk closed out the match by winning her No. 1 flight contest against van Bergen by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
 
CSU returns to action on Feb. 25 with a road match at Milwaukee with a start time of 1 p.m.
