Cougars Host Missouri Valley Conference In-State Foes at H-F This Weekend

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's tennis team returns to action this weekend as it hosts a pair of home matches against a couple of Missouri Valley Conference in-state foes at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Center in south suburban Homewood, Ill.

CSU begins its weekend slate on Saturday afternoon against Illinois State with a start time of 2 p.m. before it takes on Bradley in an early Sunday morning match that opens at 9 a.m.

The Cougars head into the weekend with a season record of 1-4 and look to snap a two-match losing streak after falling to IUPUI last Sunday by a 6-1 margin. Senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School) have tied for the team lead in singles wins with six, while both players have also teamed up to record a 7-7 mark in doubles play.

After being idle last week, Illinois State brings a 1-1 record into Saturday's match following a 4-3 victory over Eastern Illinois and an 7-0 defeat to Ball State in downstate Peoria last weekend to open its dual match season. Freshman Ivon Mihaleva leads ISU with a 6-2 singles record followed by redshirt junior Veronika Golanova with a 4-3 mark. Golanova has also amassed a 6-2 doubles record with sophomore partner Jelena Karla Vujicic.

Bradley enters the weekend with a 1-1 record going as it visits Wisconsin on Saturday before coming to Homewood. The Braves fell to Southeast Missouri State (1-6) and defeated Northern Illinois (6-1) in a pair of home matches last weekend. Freshman Victoria Gonzalez and junior Malini Wijesinghe have each tallied a team-leading 7-6 record in singles, while sophomore Natalia Barbery and freshman Sandra Maletin are the top doubles team for BU at 7-4.

CSU travels to Detroit on Feb. 9 for a non-conference road match at Detroit Mercy with a start time of 1 p.m.
