CSU Women’s Tennis Heads to Ohio to Open 2018 Season

Iesha Shepherd and Mariya Kostyuk will lead the CSU Women's Tennis team to a pair of season-opening dual matches in Ohio this week
CHICAGO – Chicago State women's tennis heads to Ohio this week for a pair of matches against Mid-American Conference foes to start its 2018 dual match season.

The Cougars take on Bowling Green in their season opener on Thursday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. then head to Maumee, Ohio for a Friday afternoon showdown against Toledo with a start time of 1 p.m.

Leading the Green and White into this week's action is the tandem of senior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Iesha Shepherd (Nassau, Bahamas/Laurel Springs School). Shepherd posted a team-best 6-3 singles record in the fall and Kostyuk recorded a 4-5 singles mark. Both players then teamed up to tally a 6-6 doubles mark and received the Western Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Month award for October 2017.

Bowling Green opens its dual schedule with a three-match homestand and welcomes back four returners from its 2016-17 team that posted a 5-15 record. Junior Paula Comella is the top returning player for the Falcons as she produced a 15-13 singles mark and a 17-11 doubles record with sophomore partner Marharita-Sophia Tavpash. Comella also advanced to the main singles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., last October.

Returning six players from last season's team that finished 9-12, Toledo starts its dual match campaign with Friday's home contest versus CSU. Sophomore Mimi Kendall-Woseley was the top player for the Rockets a season ago as she finished with an 18-8 singles record, while fellow sophomore Dee Dee Leenabanchong tallied a 16-12 singles mark. UT's top doubles team a year ago was Leenabanchong and senior Sidnay Huck as they posted a 13-7 record.

The Cougars are back in action on Jan. 26 with their home opener at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club against Green Bay which begins at 4 p.m.
