Cougars Close Regular Season with 5-2 Win at Valpo for Third Straight Victory

Junior Mariya Kostyuk posted her third straight singles win in today's regular season finale at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Chicago State women's tennis closed out its regular season slate here today after defeating host Valparaiso by a score of 5-2 in a non-conference matchup at the Valpo Tennis Complex.

CSU opened the contest with a 1-0 advantage thanks to winning all three doubles matches then claimed wins in four of the six singles flights to extend its win streak to three consecutive matches.

Redshirt senior Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and junior Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) posted a dominant 6-1 over Kathleen Hebble and Paige Heuer in the No. 1 flight, while the No. 3 tandem of junior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and freshman Judit Aubets (Major, Sanauja, Spain/Lluis Peguera) knocked off Dao Sysouvanh and Jordan Kopfer by a score of 6-1.

Junior Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and senior Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia) closed out doubles play after earning a 6-3 win over Meg Modesto and Randi Wind in the No. 2 match.

Singles play started with Gadacz defeating Kopfer by scores of 6-4 and 6-1 in the No. 4 flight and Kostyuk recorded her third straight singles win after earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory in her No. 1 contest against Hebble.

Pangestu clinched the match for the Green and White following her 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win over Sysouvanh at No. 5, and Gamboa recorded a three-set win in the No. 2 flight against Heuer via scores of 6-3, 1-6 and 7-6 (7-3).

CSU returns to action on April 28 in Las Cruces, N.M., where it will take on Seattle U in a first round match with a time to be determined.
