Women's Tennis Opens 2017 Spring Season with Two Matches at Northwestern

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's tennis team kicks off its 2017 spring season this weekend by traveling to nearby Evanston, Ill. for a pair of non-conference matches at Northwestern's Combe Tennis Center.
 
The Green and White face off against the host Wildcats on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. before taking on Akron Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
 
CSU is led by junior Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola), who holds a 9-5 singles record with a 2-0 mark in dual matches and was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week during the fall season on Nov. 2. Junior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) and sophomore Monica Pulgar (Madrid, Spain/San Jose de Cluny) rank second on the team with seven singles wins apiece to go along with each person capturing a team-leading eight doubles victories.
 
Northwestern, receiving votes in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 25 poll, open their spring season with a three-match homestand after posting a 14-11 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The top returning singles player for NU is redshirt junior Maddie Lipp, who finished with a 2412 record last season, while Lipp and junior Alex Chatt are ranked sixth in the nation after posting a 24-11 record a year ago.
 
Akron opens a six-match road swing this weekend in Evanston and welcomes back eight players from last season's squad that finished 15-10 overall and was 5-3 in Mid-American Conference play. The top singles player for the Zips is junior Sophia Geier, who currently ranks 121st nationally after posting a 7-1 fall record. Freshman Rita Pedroso has recorded a 10-3 singles record in her first collegiate season and is the team leader in doubles with an 11-3 record.

The Cougars open the home portion of their schedule on Jan. 22 at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Ill. against Toledo with a start time of 9 a.m.
