Pulgar Leads Cougars to Post Weekend Split in Wisconsin

Freshman Monica Pulgar led CSU last weekend with a 4-0 mark in singles and doubles

CHICAGO – Freshman Monica Pulgar (Madrid, Spain/San Jose de Cluny) posted an undefeated weekend going 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead the Chicago State women's tennis team to a split against a pair of Horizon League teams in Wisconsin last weekend with a 4-3 win at Green Bay followed by a 4-3 defeat at Milwaukee.

The host Phoenix captured wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to earn a 1-0 advantage, but the Green and White claimed a win at No. 3 doubles as Pulgar and senior Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) posted a 6-0 shutout victory over GB's Maria Neff and Stephanie Londre.

After GB increased its leading margin to 3-0 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, the Cougars came back with wins in the final four singles contests to capture the match.

Junior Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia) started the comeback at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Londre followed by sophomore Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) claiming a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jule-Sophie Hermann at No. 4 singles. Pulgar then knocked off Neff at No. 5 singles by identical 6-1 scores and fellow freshman Bryttish Burts (Olympia Fields, Ill./Rich Central) produced a three-set victory at No. 6 singles via scores of 6-3, 4-6 and 6-2.

Pulgar and Perez-Ochoa continued their winning ways the next day at UWM with a 6-3 win over Dana Shannon and Masha Lobanova at No. 3 doubles.

Down 1-0 in the match following doubles, CSU went to even the match at 3-3 in the singles matches.

Pangestu defeated Hayley Marshall at No. 2 by scores of 6-4 and 6-2, while Gadacz posted a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over Alysa Straub at No. 4. Pulgar later claimed a close 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4) win in the No. 5 contest over Shannon before the Panthers won the No. 6 singles to end the match.

The Cougars return to the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club on Thursday, March 10 with a pair of home matches against Missouri State (1 p.m.) and NCAA Division III North Central College (7 p.m.).
