Women’s Tennis Opens Homestand with 7-0 Win over Valparaiso

Lorea Gamboa came back from a set down to take a three-set win at No. 2 singles today against Valparaiso

HOMEWOOD, Ill. – Chicago State women's tennis opened a five-match homestand here today on a good note as it captured a 7-0 victory over visiting Valparaiso at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club.

The Cougars took two out of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) and freshman Monica Pulgar (Madrid, Spain/San Jose de Cluny) earned a 6-3 victory over Meg Modesto and Randi Wind. Freshman Bryttish Burts (Olympia Fields, Ill./Rich Central) and junior Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Hallie Roach and Erin Stall by a score of 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles contest.

CSU continued its momentum in the singles matches by winning all six contests, however, four of the matches went to a deciding third set.

Pulgar defeated Roach in straight sets by identical 6-2 scores at No. 5 singles to earn her team-leading 13th singles win of the year. Perez-Ochoa knocked off Wind in the No. 4 match via scores of 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4, while Burts claimed a 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 victory at No. 6 singles over Morgan Parks.

Sophomore Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 3 contest over Modesto and Pangestu defeated Kat Hebble at No. 1 by scores of 6-3, 2-6 and 6-3. Sophomore Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) came back from a 6-3 loss in the first set of her No. 2 singles battle with Paige Heuer to win the final two sets by scores of 6-3 and 12-10.

CSU hosts the second Western Athletic Conference cluster of the season this weekend beginning Friday afternoon against Seattle at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club with a start time of 3 p.m.
